Some smartphone operating systems are more secure than others. “BlackBerry is heralded by CIOs as the go-to for corporate communications because of its secure design from the ground up,” Siciliano says. “iOS is secure due to its closed nature, but Android’s source code is open.”

If you’re looking for a secure smartphone ecosystem, you may want to go with BlackBerry first, then iOS, and then Android. But if you’ve already got a phone—and it’s an Android phone— try a mobile security suite such as Lookout Security & Antivirus (free; and Avast! Mobile Security (free; Lookout scans apps that you download from the Google Play store to ensure you don’t accidentally download malware, viruses, or spyware.

If you’re willing to pay a little extra, however, you can get more features. McAfee Mobile Security ($30; is pricey, but along with an antivirus scanner you also get call and SMS filtering, mobile device location services (if your phone gets lost or stolen), remote wipe and lock services, and real-time web protection.
